Thinking ahead to navigating new relationships after an unplanned pregnancy
Considering adoption can come from a place of deep love for your baby. Even so, you may worry about how the people close to you will understand your decision. You may worry, though, that your choice would be harder for others in your life to understand. From your boyfriend to your parents to your friend group, navigating new relationships after an unplanned pregnancy can feel intimidating. Our caring Florida adoption team at Legacy Adoption Services® is here to support you through moving forward after adoption, should you choose that path.
What are some tips for navigating new relationships after an unplanned pregnancy?
After an unplanned pregnancy, it’s important to focus on healing and finding your own happiness. Whether you choose adoption or parenting, our options counselors offer this advice for navigating new relationships after an unplanned pregnancy.
- Surround yourself with people who love you and will listen. You can set boundaries with anyone who pressures or shames you. A trusted person may also ask difficult questions because they care. Your options counselor can help you talk through those conversations and think about the support you need.
- It’s wise to set boundaries when it comes to what you share and who you share it with. Not everyone needs to know your private feelings or details about your experience. You are not obligated to answer questions from people you barely know, and it’s perfectly OK to tell people that you don’t want to discuss it. It’s also OK to walk away from a conversation where you’re feeling pressured to share things you aren’t comfortable sharing.
- If you make an adoption plan, one of your new relationships after an unplanned pregnancy may be with the family you choose for your baby. Your Legacy options counselor will first talk with you about the kind of contact you’d like after placement, whether that’s photos and updates, phone calls or visits. We’ll then share profiles of families seeking that same type of openness. As you get to know a family, your counselor will help you build on those shared expectations and prepare for staying connected.
