  • Step 1. Establishing your vision for your child’s adoption. Your options counselor will work closely with you to think through your preferences for your child’s adoptive family, as well as what type of contact, if any, that you would like to have with the family after the placement. All of your preferences will be documented in your adoption plan.
  • Step 2. Choosing the adoptive family. We will present you with profiles of waiting families who share your preferences for ongoing contact, and who meet any other criteria that are important to you. You will be able to choose the family that feels like the best fit, and you can meet with them in person before making a final decision if you wish to.
  • Step 3. Legal placement with the adoptive family you choose. At least 48 hours after your baby is born, or when you are cleared to leave the hospital, you can sign the consents for your baby’s adoption.
  • Step 4. Postpartum recovery and support. The Legacy team will ensure that you receive appropriate postpartum care to ensure a healthy recovery, along with ongoing counseling support for as long as you need it after the placement.
  • Step 5. Building a relationship with your child and adoptive family. If you choose an open adoption, we will stay in touch with you and the adoptive family to facilitate ongoing contact, according to your preferences.
