Questions to ask adoption agencies as your baby’s parent

When you’re considering placing a baby for adoption in Florida, the agency you choose to work with can make all the difference. Taking the time to research your options can help you find the right fit. Our caring team at Legacy Adoption Services® feels that there are no silly questions when it comes to getting the information you need to move forward with confidence. Here, we share some of the common questions to ask adoption agencies when researching your options.

What are some questions to ask adoption agencies?

  • Is the agency licensed in the state of Florida? If you are considering placing a baby for adoption in Florida, look for a licensed Florida child placing agency. Ask how its team will guide you through the process and support you and your baby.
  • Will a counselor be able to speak with me when and where it’s convenient for me? A trustworthy agency understands the complexities and concerns involved in learning about adoption. Counselors should be available to assist you any time, day or night, by phone, at the hospital, or at a place where you feel comfortable.
  • Will the agency pressure me to make an adoption plan for my baby? At Legacy, we’re here to listen, answer your questions and help you explore your options – not pressure you. You don’t need to have made a decision before calling, and talking with us doesn’t commit you to an adoption plan.
  • Who chooses my baby’s adoptive parents? You do. Your Legacy options counselor will first talk with you about what matters most to you in a family, and the kind of contact you’d like after adoption. We’ll then share profiles of families seeking that same type of openness and help you get to know them. If you’d prefer Legacy to choose a family for you, we can talk through that, too.
  • What kind of counseling support is available to me? You can contact Legacy anytime, day or night. From your first questions about adoption through choosing a family, preparing for the hospital and life after placement, your options counselor is here to listen and support you. You’ll have lifetime access to adoption-related counseling at no cost to you.
  • Who will help me understand the legal steps? Your Legacy options counselor will help coordinate the legal steps of your adoption and help you get your questions answered. If you’re an expectant mother with an active adoption plan, we offer a consultation with a separate attorney at no cost to you. All expectant parents are also welcome to consult their own private attorney at any time, whether or not they have an adoption plan with Legacy.
  • What financial support may be available during pregnancy? If you’re considering placing a baby for adoption in Florida, your Legacy options counselor will talk with you about your needs and explain the support available. When you make an adoption plan with Legacy, we cover your pregnancy- and delivery-related medical expenses. Depending on your situation, you may also qualify for help with certain living expenses.
