How to adopt a baby in Florida
Wondering what do you need to do to adopt? There are a few things to know before you get started.
- To adopt a child through a licensed adoption agency like Legacy Adoption Services, you must be at least 18 years old, according to Florida state laws. In Florida, there is no maximum age limit to adopt a child.
- Marital status can also play a role. Our agency works exclusively with husband-and-wife couples adopting together. However, in the state of Florida overall, marriage is not a requirement to adopt a child.
- You must also thoroughly document your financial situation and prove that you are emotionally and physically able to provide a stable, secure and loving home for a child. The state of Florida does not require adoptive parents to meet a specific income level to adopt, but proving financial stability is important.
Other state-mandated adoption requirements include two important milestones along the way to meeting your new baby.
- All couples must pass a criminal background check, as well as central child abuse and neglect registry checks for both parents and any other household members ages 12 and older. If you moved to Florida within the last five years, a check will also be performed of child abuse registries in your prior state(s) of residence.
- All couples wishing to adopt must also complete a home study. A home study in Florida includes not just an inspection of your home and the things that you have ready to welcome your child, but also in-depth interviews with both parents and a discussion of your personal backgrounds and mental readiness for the rigors of parenthood.
We understand that meeting adoption requirements may feel intimidating, but rest assured, you’ll have the support and guidance of Legacy’s expert team every step of the way.
