Learn about the steps of the domestic adoption process
Welcoming a baby into your family is a life-changing experience that brings boundless joy. If you’re hoping to adopt a baby, it’s wise to start with a good understanding of the entire adoption timeline, including all the steps involved in the journey to bringing home your little one. The domestic adoption process may feel complicated at first, but with Legacy Adoption Services® guiding you through the adoption process in Florida, you can feel good knowing that every detail is well taken care of.
What are the steps in the domestic adoption process?
Adopting a baby starts with choosing your adoption agency. Our licensed child-placing agency can help you take care of all the necessary steps on your pathway to parenthood. Our goal is not only to take care of all the legal aspects and match you with a mother choosing adoption, but also to ensure that you are ready to welcome a child into your heart and home.
Step 1 – Learn all about the adoption timeline. Our experienced options counselors are happy to answer all of your questions about the domestic adoption process, and we will stay by your side to guide you through every stage. We will also help you make important decisions about your vision for the adoption, including specifics about the child you wish to adopt and the level of contact you are comfortable with after the adoption is complete.
Step 2 – Create a compelling adoption profile to help mothers get to know you. This can include personal details about you and your values, family, home and interests. This is the place that you can share the many wonderful opportunities that you are eager to provide for a child, and explain why you wish to adopt a baby. It will also include photos of you and your spouse enjoying the activities that you love. We are happy to help you develop a profile that showcases who you are and all the love you have to give.
Step 3 – Complete your home study and background checks. This process ensures that you are prepared to provide a safe, financially stable, secure and loving environment for your future child.
Step 4 – Wait for a match. Flexibility and patience are key. This phase may move faster if you are open to matching with children of different races, backgrounds and circumstances, as well as to various levels of contact with the baby’s mother moving forward.
Step 5 – Once you have a match, it’s time for everyone to get to know each other. In most cases, the baby’s mother is open to getting to know you on a personal level. We are happy to help facilitate these conversations by phone, video or in person, depending on the mother’s preferences.
Step 6 – Get ready to welcome your baby! This is your nesting phase, as you prepare for your baby’s arrival.
Step 7 – Celebrate your baby’s birth. The baby’s mother is in control of many important decisions regarding who will be present at the birth and when and how the adoptive parents can meet the baby. In Florida, adoption consents are signed at least 48 hours after the delivery, after which you are the legal parents and can bring your beautiful baby home.
Step 8 – A licensed social worker from our agency will visit with you a few times after the placement to ensure that all is going well and that you get any extra support that you may need.
Step 9 – Finalize your adoption in court. This is the exciting milestone day when you will receive your final adoption decree, so be sure to take some pictures to commemorate the occasion.
Throughout the domestic adoption process, our experienced, caring team will be by your side, guiding you through every step.
